Industrial sectors we support across Belgium

Northern Peaks Engineering Solutions works with industrial clients in several sectors, mostly within reach of our Lochristi base. The engineering problems differ between them, but the underlying discipline is the same: define the requirement properly, coordinate the disciplines, and make sure the plant can be built and operated as designed.

Below is a look at the contexts we know best and what tends to matter in each.

Most of our work sits in four groups: food and beverage manufacturing, data centres, utilities and energy infrastructure, and technical buildings. Heavy industry and niche manufacturing round out the picture, because those assignments usually arrive as a mix of process, piping and air-quality work rather than as a single clean category.

What stays constant is the method. We start by writing down what the plant actually has to do, then we coordinate the disciplines so the electrical, mechanical and process drawings agree with each other before anything is ordered. If you are not sure whether your sector fits, the descriptions below should make that clear in a few minutes.

Sector by sector

Each row below is one context we work in, with the constraints that usually drive the design decisions.

Food and beverage manufacturing

Hygiene · cleaning cycles · traceability

Food and beverage is a recurring segment in Belgian industry, and it brings constraints that other sectors do not have to think about. Hygiene zones, cleaning cycles and traceability shape how equipment is arranged and how changeovers are handled. Process design and automation usually have to be developed together, because a recipe change touches both.

Sustainable factory design has become part of the conversation here, often driven by energy costs around heating, cooling and cleaning. Retrofits in this sector tend to be tightly scheduled, since production windows are short and product waste is expensive.

Data centres

Cooling · redundancy · failure behaviour

Data centres have become a significant engineering segment in Belgium, driven by the concentration of digital infrastructure in and around the major cities. The engineering focus is different from a process plant: cooling, power redundancy, reliability and how the facility behaves when something fails. Integrated infrastructure planning matters more than individual equipment choices.

This is adjacent to our core process work rather than identical to it, and it rewards the same habit of defining interfaces early. A data hall that is well planned mechanically but poorly coordinated electrically will still have problems.

Utilities and energy infrastructure

Distribution · redundancy · sequencing

Utility systems serve several internal users at once, which makes distribution and redundancy the central design questions. Steam, compressed air, cooling water, process water and electrical distribution all have their own constraints and their own failure modes. When one of them is undersized, it shows up as a problem somewhere else entirely.

Modifications to utility systems often have to be done without stopping the users, which turns the work into a sequencing exercise as much as a design one.

Technical buildings

Services · maintenance access · proportionality

Technical buildings house equipment rather than people, and their engineering is dominated by services: ventilation, cooling, power, access and fire safety. The design has to accommodate maintenance access and future equipment changes, which is easier to plan at the drawing stage than to retrofit later.

These projects are often smaller in budget than a full plant, and they reward a proportionate approach rather than an oversized engineering package.

Heavy industry and niche manufacturing

Piping · tanks and silos · air quality

Heavy industry covers a wide range, from piping systems and heat exchangers to tanks, silos and air quality installations. Providers in this space often work from service-level support up to full EPC delivery, and the engineering content varies enormously between assignments.

What these projects share is a tolerance for complexity and a low tolerance for ambiguity. Specifications need to be precise because the equipment is expensive and the lead times are long.

The local context in East Flanders

Coordination happens nearby, not across time zones

East Flanders has a dense concentration of technical firms, consultancies and industrial sites. Business registers in Lochristi alone list a range of engineering-related and technical service companies, from established consultancies to small business-support operations founded recently.

That density is useful: specialist contractors, suppliers and testing services are usually within reach, which keeps site visits, sample checks and handovers short. For a client, the practical benefit is that coordination happens locally rather than across time zones.

About Northern Peaks Engineering

Matching sector to project type

Sector matters less than the shape of the project. A retrofit on a live food plant and a retrofit on a utility system share more than they differ: both need sequencing, temporary arrangements and a clear shutdown plan. A greenfield data centre and a greenfield process line both live or die on interface definition.

When you contact us, describe the plant and the constraint rather than the sector label. That gets to a useful answer faster.

Project shape What decides the outcome
Retrofit on a live plant Shutdown plan and temporary arrangements
Utility system modification Sequencing while users stay online
Greenfield data hall Interface definition between disciplines
Greenfield process line Requirement written before equipment is chosen
Where every one of them starts A clear brief

If your sector is not listed

The list above is where we spend most of our time, not a hard boundary. If your project involves process design, automation, commissioning or plant modification, the engineering method transfers even when the product does not.

The honest answer is that we will tell you if a project is outside our experience rather than learn on your budget. Northern Peaks Engineering Solutions is an engineering and technical solutions provider based in Lochristi, Belgium, directed by Northern Peaks Innovations BV and Northern Peaks Systems BV, and registered under number 1097073562.
